NRK orders 68 PXW-FS7M2K cameras and 20 PXW-FS5K cameras to standardise its workflow, and become more streamlined
Basingstoke, 15 September 2017 – Norwegian broadcaster NRK is undergoing a technology shift, and as such, has announced a public tender in order to replace its range of varying, aging, cameras. Sony Professional is proud to announce it has won the public tender, and is supplying NRK with 68 brand new Sony PXW-FS7M2K cameras and 20 PXW-FS5K cameras. In addition to standardising its solution on a common camera platform and shooting format, NRK also wishes to gain extended expertise and optimise its workflows.
NRK is the largest media organisation in Norway. It was founded in 1933 and employs approximately 3,400 people across the country. As the Norwegian government owned broadcasting company, it broadcasts on radio, TV and new media, with three nation-wide TV stations and 15 nation-wide radio channels on DAB. Since it was founded in 1933, NRK has predominantly been financed through the annual broadcast license fee.
Cameras to meet all demands
With the new Sony PXW-FS7M2K and PXW-FS5K, NRK aims to standardise its camera pool with cameras that meet all their needs, and that can be utilised by creatives both within NRK’s headquarters in Oslo, as well as by the regional offices.
Until now, the complex production workflow was time consuming for the NRK team. Therefore, when considering renewing their camera pool, it was necessary for the broadcasting company to choose equipment that would increase quality, standardise workflows, and bring time saving efficiencies.
“NRK has now chosen a camera family which allow us to choose the right camera for the shoot, instead of letting the camera dictate the shoot,” says Are Andreassen, Head of Production Facilities and Broadcast Equipment at NRK. “The new cameras are not limited to one set of production genre, as they can be used for a wide varities of production, including news production and drama.”
The international phenomenon “SKAM” is shot with Sony PXW-FS7
NRK is familiar with the Sony PXW-FS7, as the camera had previously been used in several NRK productions. The internationally acclaimed series SKAM began production with an FS7 camera, due to its compact size and functionality. SKAM was shot with a relatively small production team, and required a camera with adequate functionality, which would eliminate unnecessary production and reduce the time spent in post production.
Suitable for NRK’s content production
When deciding on the new cameras, NRK consulted user representatives from several different user groups in order to find the most suitable cameras. The shortlisted products were then reviewed and rated based on five different elements:
1. Ergonomics
2. Optic flexibility
3. Expandability
4. Operational control
5. Workflow
Sony PXW-FS7M2K and PXW-FS5K were chosen because they had the overall best score based on the five different review elements as well as coming in at the preferred budget.
“In a world with a lot of subjective opinions, it was crucial for us to choose a camera that all the different user groups could live with,” says Andreassen.
“We are delighted that NRK has chosen Sony acquisition tools to enable the streamlining of production demanded for todays multi-platform media environment,” says Michael Sheehan, Key Account Manager Nordics. “With the PXW-FS7M2, and PXW-FS5 ‘E mount’ solution, the NRK have a large selection in optics, from multiple suppliers, to choose from, in addition to the large selection of recording codecs provided. As part of the NRK streamlining, they may also take advantage of the unique Sony Electronic Variable ND Filter feature, providing efficiencies during production and, with this, savings in post production.”
